General Recommendations

For a typical 12ft x 12ft stable with rubber matting, a comfortable bed covering ¾ of the floor keeping an area clear at the front for water and haylage would take just 2 bales of Green Mile Equine Bedding!! This would create a bed 2 – 3 inches deep and banked up at the sides.

Green Mile Bedding can be maintained very similar too wood shavings by skipping out and removing the small saturated wet areas on a daily basis, replacing any bedding with a few handfuls of fresh bedding.

Because of the highly absorbent nature of Green mile Bedding you will find the wet areas to be contained in a much smaller part of the bed, this prevents cross contamination of wet areas spreading throughout the bed like you usually find with wood shavings, making our bedding much more cost effective!

Delivery

Green Mile Equine Bedding comes 30 bales to a pallet.  Delivery is nationwide and customers can be contacted an hour before delivery to meet the driver should your delivery address be different to your home address.

Delivery access should be discussed when placing an order and also offloading facilities need planning as we have various options available.

The majority of our deliveries are offloaded with a tail lift and pump truck which all our haulage vehicles have the facility of. Some of the larger yards we deliver to have Forklift / Tractor / JCB facilities to unload on uneven ground.  We have the option of sending a MOFFET Mounted Forklift with the delivery and the driver will unload the pallet for you and place in you chosen storage area. A charge will apply for this service which we can discuss when placing your order. Please note only Arctic Vehicles have this facility so access maybe an issue to consider, we would recommend this delivery option on larger orders with suitable access.

Storage

Every single bale we manufacture is handmade and sealed with a high quality vinyl tape. We therefore have a consistent method of quality control to ensure the best possible protection for your bedding.  The bags used are made from a heavy duty non slip polymer which will protect the bedding during transit and during storage on your yard.

All our pallets are shrink-wrapped and top sheeted for safe storage outside during the harsher winter conditions.  

What Makes Our Bedding Different?

A question we get asked a lot and for good reason too, cardboard’s cardboard right? Wrong...

When we The Green Mile Company first started to market our equine bedding we faced a lot of potential customers who’d already tried the other brands of cardboard bedding and didn’t like what they found. When we asked why a familiar pattern of reasons started to emerge:

1. The bedding lies very flat not making a very comfortable bed.
2. The bedding is difficult to muck out, sticking to the floor.
3. Dust content seemed high.
4. Difficult to separate dry bedding from wet using traditional tools.
5. Customers found to be removing a lot of part wet bedding which they found to be quite wasteful.

Now some of the issues regarding the mucking out maybe due to inexperience with the bedding, we’re not sure and we are not in the business of criticising potential customers about their stable management. What we did discover was by looking back at the more traditional types of bedding, we found good and bad points which we felt we could take advantage of or leave out as the case may be.

The Tech’ part:

Why is Green Mile Bedding more absorbent than other cardboard bedding? It’s actually the cut part of the cardboard which absorbs the fluid, this allows the fluid to travel between the corrugated flutes and allow the paper to absorb and store this moisture.

With Green Mile Bedding the total surface area which absorbs the liquid (the cut part) is equal to the storage surface area found at the centre of each card board piece. This almost eliminates the possibility of any bedding pieces being partially used which in effect increases the efficiency and cost effectiveness of our bedding

Old Dog, New Tricks...

A lot of our customers will still agree you can’t beat a good straw bed but finding good straw at the right price these days seems a lot harder than most people may think? What we do know about straw is that its natural design makes it an ideal product for making stable beds. Adopting this design and applying it to the beneficial properties of cardboard we have created a bedding that not only make an extremely comfortable bed that  is easy for you to manage using traditional bedding tools, but a bed that benefits the animals by keeping them warm and dry.

Turning the bed over to reveal the wet areas for removal gives the cardboard the opportunity to reform.  Cardboard holds a lot of memory but when it’s cut into small squares and used as bedding, it loses the opportunity to regain its form once it’s compressed / flattened.  Cutting the Cardboard into small strips gives the bedding the opportunity to behave like straw which interlocks with itself creating a bed which is spring and stable, this helps with horses who like to bury their waste or who like to kick their bedding about.

Disposal

Good management and correct disposal of horse waste is an issue which every horse owner or keeper must address, Green Mile equine bedding is 100% bio-degradable and complete breakdown usually takes between 8-12 weeks depending on weather conditions. Muck heaps can be collected by the agricultural industry for immediate use on the land, in line with the Environmental Permitting (EP) Regulations.
